  • IE7 Re-installed, and some thoughts

With some help from the IE7 team, I got IE7 installed. Turns out that there is a conflict between Microsoft (IE7 Beta2) and Google (Desktop Version 2). The Web history indexing performed by Google Desktop somehow conflicts with the way that IE7 Beta 2 handles Web history.

Now that it’s installed I want to try it out. But so far, nothing about it rocks my world. I am sure that the IE7 team could give me an amazing tour, but it isn’t a workspace for me. Firefox is more than “just” a browser. I work in Firefox. And IE7 doesn’t feel like a workspace platform.

I will continue to try it out for a couple of weeks. Maybe I will find the killer app for it.

  • What is your wallet?

Merlin Mann has a What’s your favorite minimalist wallet? thread happening over on 43 Folders. [here]

I tried the Jimi. Too small.

    This one is perfect.

It’s a business card case I bought at the Dell company store on a business trip 5 years ago. I have used it ever since. Holds more than a Jimi, but those are 3 X 5 index cards next to wallet, to give you some sense of scale.

I would never go back to a real wallet, like my father carried.

Dell could score some serious bonus points (especially after the fiasco with ZenWife’s computer) with me by sending me a bunch of these to distribute to friends and family.

  • IE7 — First Impressions == Uninstalled

I installed IE7 Beta 2 tonight. It lasted 15 minutes.
What ended its stay? Opening a new tab crashed the application.
Let me know when: It. Just. Works.
There is likely some secret squirrel hack that fixes this. I don’t want to hear it. An application at this level of pre-release development should not encounter a bug as simple as this.

  • Jimi Wallet – Revisited

I have been using the Jimi Wallet for about a week, and I have retired it for now.

I can’t operate with just five cards. I have too much happening in my life. I know that this violates all of the GTD principles, but I already have it narrowed down to a folding leather business card holder. And for my life, it holds what I need.

  • Art of the Start: 10/20/30 Rule and Beyond Bulltes

I am reading the copy of Art of the Start I won in the inBubbleWrap draw on St. Patty’s Day, and I am struck by the philosophical meshing between Guy’s 10/20/30 rule and Cliff Altkinson’s Beyond Bullets approach to Powerpoint.

In my work environement, I am occasionally called upon to produce, and sit through, Powerpoint presentations. I find myself trying desperately to use the Beyond Bullets approach: maximum message with minimum text. Adding the 10/20/30 rule gives me another tool to not only re-examine how I produce presentations, but to critique those that I sit through.

I may ask Guy if it is possible to buy and distribute the chapter containing 10/20/30 to all the people in my company. Worth a shot, as I can’t afford 60 copies of the book.

Art of the Start is worth it, just for 10/20/30.

  • Check Point Issue: What your security admins don’t want you to know

Earlier today, I wrote about my issues with a conflict between Check Point and Netscreen VPN software. Well, I figured out how to make them work together.

I had the answer in my hands the whole time. Check Point software binds to the network interfaces on your machine. Once you remove this binding, Check Point refuses to work at all, allowing you to use the Netscreen software. Re-enabling this binding then allows you to use the Check Point software again.

To do this, select your primary network interface, and uncheck the Check Point SecuRemote binding, as indicated below.

If you are one of the two people in the world who needs this, I hope this helps.
