Working from home today…again

This is the second day in a row that I have been working from home. Why? My car developed a terminal electrical problem on Sunday. This should surprise no one when I mention that it is a late 1980s Honda Civic.

Honda/Acura #4: Honda Accords, Preludes, Civics and Acura Integras built from 1986-1989 (Bosch reman alternators AL256X, AL382X, AL383X, AL386X, AL387X, AL388X, AL451X) are prone to a no-start condition due to a low battery charge. This condition can be traced to frequent short trip driving with the rear window defogger left in the “on” position, along with high underhood temperatures. The combination of the continual discharge due to the defogger being left on and the high underhood temperatures, tends to cause these models to dine out frequently on batteries.
To curb the battery appetite of these cars, Honda and Acura have introduced defogger switch/timers and a battery heat shield. The defogger switch/timer automatically shuts off after 25 minutes, and the heat shield helps deflect some of the engine’s heat away from the battery. Honda part numbers are 35500-SE0-A11 (defogger switch/timer) and 06377-SE3-A00 (battery cover kit). Acura only offers these parts as a complete kit: 1986-87 models are kit 06377-SD2-A01 and 1988-89 models are kit 06377-SD2-A11.
Understanding Your Import Car’s Electrical System

This means the alternator needs to be replaced (second one in 6 years).
Looks like cold beans and uncooked rice to eat for a while…

GrabPERF: Measurement location #2 is now online.

There are now TWO GrabPERF measurement locations.
There have been a few adjustments to the collected statistics as a result.
Many thanks to Sean Walberg for getting this debugged.
Ok folks…whose next? Who wants to host a GrabPERF measurement location?
Requirements here. The only addition to this is that I need to know what time zone you’re in.

And people ask why I left SiliValley…

…and why I will NEVER go back.
Jeremy Zawodny on the Bay Area housing market. [here]
Earth to SiliValley Employers: No one who has lived in the Bay Area, and escaped, will EVER return…unless the money is right.
And for me, getting me to work in that nightmare area again will take as much money per day as it would take me to commute to work in Manhattan every day.

GrabPERF: Remote Agent Script Ready…I think

Well, due to the paranoid 1d10ts who run my work network, I can’t test the remote script from my work linux machine. I have one beta tester and need some others to ensure that it works.
Again, what you need on your linux machine:

  • cURL (compiled from source or with the devel packages)
  • MySQL client and devel packages
  • Time::CTime for PERL
  • A static external IP address so I can allow you to access the backend systems through my firewall

I am ready; sign up now!

GrabPERF: Looking for a few foolish….errr, brave souls

I am looking to implement some new GrabPERF features in the next few days (I still have some vacation left!), and I need some volunteers to help me out.
WHAT YOU NEED

  1. A linux machine with the MySQL and cURL development libraries installed
  2. A static IP address (even a static external NAT IP is ok)
  3. The ability to do some basic configuration
  4. The ability to set up CRON jobs
  5. The ability to install PERL modules

Drop me a comment and I will fill you in.

GrabPERF: Brazen Appeal for Donations

Ok folks, now that GrabPERF has been up and running for a few weeks, and people have actually been looking at the data (including the CEO’s of two blog search tools!), it’s time to ask the community that is using this service to contribute to keep it running.
Decommissioned hardware. $20. I am not asking for the world.
Currently, this system runs on my home broadband connection using six year-old hardware. that is…well, having issues.
For all of you who do contribute, I thank you in advance.

Week Off: Salisbury Beach

Went to Salisbury Beach with the rampaging horde.
Tried out swimming in real surf…I’ll let you know when I find my ego. I was thrown around like a drunk in a moshpit.
And the sunburn…skin cancer here we come.
Ok…off to wash sea salt off the monsters.
