Rant the Second: Gutter Helmet, Again

So, in my second rant of the day, I am falling back to my favourite target of tension: Gutter Helmet. This long-running saga in one that I wish I had never been involved in, and in 20/20 hindsight, I wish that I had just chosen to go with standard gutters, rather than some gadgety gimmick that is installed by a company that seems to value customer service about 14th on their Top Ten list.
The latest installment has come about because one, if not more, of our downspouts is now blocked with … something. The thing is that these top-of-the-line gadgets should never become clogged. And if they do, we have a lifetime maintenance guarantee.
Well, they guarantee that maintenance will occur sometime in my lifetime.
It will be nearly 8 weeks since I called before the service person can come out and clean out a downspout. They said that it would happen this week (week of August 17th), but then changed their minds and moved the date out to the week of (maybe the day of?) September 3rd.
It’s not a hard fix. It shouldn’t take that long. And I know that the weather hasn’t been that great. But 8 weeks is a little long, especially for someone whose installation experience is already so far past acceptable.
So, below, I have created a little poll to get a feeling for how other folks with Gutter Helmet installs feel about their decision. Let us know!

  1. I had Gutter Helmet installed at my cottage less than two years ago. I noticed this spring water was dripping out the end of the eavestroughs. Upon inspection, they were full of water. All four downspouts were completely clogged. I called the salesperson who sold me the stuff who said he would get back to me and there would probably be a service charge for them to inspect the problem. He never called back. I removed downspout connections and cleaned the evestroughs myself. Regular eavestroughs would probably collect the same amount of debris, but would be easier to clean and half the price.

  2. We unfortunately purchased Gutter Helmet leaf guard system for the front and back of our home 3 years ago. What a HUGE mistake! After installation, the crevice between the gaurd (“Helmet”) and the gutter has attracted house sparrows, which now nest in the convenient gap. We have seen leaves and debris blown over the guard and lodge in the gutter. Water drips between the gutter and house for days after raining. The worst problem, however; are the 3 years of ice dams and icicles which now form on the guard in both front and back of the house. This NEVER happened before, and no other modification has been made to add to the problem. The ice load get so heavy that when it finally releases it sounds like a train rushing down the roof and with explosive force smashes into the ground, crushing anything it lands on. We are afraid to let our pets out during these episodes, thinking harm may come to them. Thanks Gutter Helmet leaf guard system, your product has posed both safety and structural dangers to our home, and instead of being an amenity it has DEVALUED the overall worth of our house. We consider Gutter Helmet leaf guard system as the WORST possible option in home improvement, and in recourse, we will be romoving the Gutter Helmet leaf guar system and throwing it where it belongs – IN THE TRASH!

  4. Looking for info on how the Gutter Helmet should be installed. I think the installation is all wrong. The installer layed the Helmet on top of the shingles so the water can run down behind. Now I have wet ceilings in the corners where I have valley's on the roof. They have been back a couple of times to caulk the shit out of top of the Helemt where it lays on the roof. Neeed to see where they say tuck the Helmet up under a row of shingles so the water runs over rather than under??????

I think Gutter Helmet should be SHUT DOWN!!! Terrible system. Expensive system that does not work and just try and get someone to come out to fix problems. They just dont return your calls. We all should be sueing them for our money back.
