Just noticed that Bob Wyman of PubSub dropped in to look at the GrabPERF data we are collecting. [here]
Although Bob’s pride is evident, I do caution that being the top of a performance index is simply one measure of success. There is the whole discussion of relevancy of results, but that is beyond the scope of a performance-related discussion, such as the one I am encouraging on this blog.
Some of the concepts that I have been collaborating on have just been released to the public by my employer. Extending the outdated concepts of comparing Web sites simply on speed and availability, we have created Consistency and Optimization indices. [here]
These destroy any hope that faster is always better. Having a consistent Web performance and highly optimized site design counts for more as I get older than raw speed does.
My analogy is simple, and comes from the late, great Hunter S Thompson:
In horse breeding, for instance, there is a definite risk in breeding two fast horses who are both a little crazy. The offspring will likely be very fast and also very crazy. So the trick in breeding thoroughbreds is to retain the good traits and filter out the bad.

Well, it was bound to happen. Someone from a PR Agency asked if I was willing to go on the record today to discuss the GrabPERF results for the site they represent.
This exposes the critical weakness in my plan for world domination. I am, effectively, providing a low-octane sub-set of the information that my employer currently provides. I am using GrabPERF as a learning resource for myself, as well as for gathering some useful data that I know people are interested in.
I cannot comment on the data beyond the realm of my blog without overstepping the limited leeway allowed me by my employer. I am more than willing to provide documentation on the methodology, and provide raw data for publication purposes. But my position puts me in a very awkward position, and I refuse to find the edge of that cliff.
The people who use GrabPERF the most may or may not have the resources to purchase a commercial Web Performance Measurement service; that is not my call to make. If they do, I am completely comfortable analyzing the data and commenting on it as a representative of my employer.

ZenWife started excavating by the front porch while I was in Minneapolis. We were hoping to find the cause of the basement flooding we get whenever it rains.
We were expecting to dig an 8 foot long by 6 foot deep trench to find the problem.
When I hit the 2.5 foot mark this morning, I hit a really big rock.
It looks like an animal burrow. It’s not. It’s 85 years of erosion that created a tunnel through the foundation and into the weak spot in the basement where the water streams out.
Hole patched with mortar and stones and hydraulic cement to patch the inside.
Fingers crossed.
